Trump ‘In Favor’ of Proxy Voting for New Parents, But Stops Short of Endorsing Luna’s Resolution

President Donald Trump has once again shown his support for working parents by endorsing the idea of proxy voting for new parents serving in the House of Representatives. This move has dealt a blow to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who had shut down the House floor for the week on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Thursday, President Trump said that he is “in favor” of allowing new parents to vote remotely, in order to accommodate their responsibilities as parents. This statement comes as a response to the recent controversy surrounding the issue of proxy voting in the House.

The controversy began when Representative Mike Johnson introduced a resolution that would allow new parents to vote by proxy, meaning they could designate another member of Congress to cast their vote on their behalf. This would enable new parents to fulfill their duties as representatives while also taking care of their newborns.

However, Speaker Johnson shut down the House floor for the week, effectively blocking the resolution from being voted on. This move was met with criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, who argued that new parents should not be denied the opportunity to vote on important issues.

President Trump’s statement has brought a new perspective to the debate. While he did not explicitly endorse Representative Johnson’s resolution, his support for the concept of proxy voting for new parents is a step in the right direction. It shows that the President is aware of the challenges faced by working parents and is willing to find solutions to support them.

This is not the first time President Trump has shown his support for working parents. In 2017, he signed into law the Federal Employee Paid Leave Act, which provides 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal employees. This move was widely praised by working parents and advocates for family-friendly policies.

The President’s statement has also been welcomed by new parents in Congress. Representative Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), who recently gave birth to her first child, expressed her gratitude for the President’s support. She said, “As a new mom and a member of Congress, I am grateful for President Trump’s support for proxy voting for new parents. This will allow us to fulfill our duties as representatives while also taking care of our newborns.”

The issue of proxy voting for new parents has gained traction in recent years, as more and more women are being elected to Congress. In 2019, a record-breaking number of women were sworn into Congress, with many of them being new mothers. This has brought attention to the lack of family-friendly policies in Congress and the need for change.

While some may argue that proxy voting goes against the traditional way of voting in person, it is important to recognize that times are changing. With the advancement of technology, remote voting is becoming more feasible and can be a practical solution for new parents.

In conclusion, President Trump’s statement in favor of proxy voting for new parents is a positive step towards supporting working parents in Congress. It is a recognition of the challenges faced by new parents and a willingness to find solutions to accommodate their responsibilities. This move has the potential to bring about positive change and create a more family-friendly environment in Congress. Let us hope that this issue will be addressed and resolved soon, so that new parents can fulfill their duties as representatives while also being able to take care of their families.
