GOP Lawmakers Demand OPM Halt Taxpayer-Funded Abortions for Members of Congress, Staff

In a recent move, two dozen Republican lawmakers have come together to demand that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) put an end to taxpayer-funded abortions for members of Congress and their staff. This comes after it was revealed that these individuals have access to healthcare plans that include coverage for elective abortions, which goes against federal law.

The issue of taxpayer-funded abortions has been a contentious one for years, with many arguing that it is unethical to use public funds for a procedure that goes against the beliefs of a significant portion of the population. The Hyde Amendment, which has been in place since 1976, prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. However, it seems that this law is being disregarded when it comes to members of Congress and their staff.

According to the group of Republican lawmakers, the OPM has been allowing members of Congress and their staff to enroll in healthcare plans that cover elective abortions. This is a clear violation of the Hyde Amendment and goes against the will of the American people who do not want their tax dollars to be used for this purpose.

The move to demand OPM to halt taxpayer-funded abortions for members of Congress and their staff is not just a political one, but a moral one as well. It is a stand for the sanctity of life and the protection of the rights of taxpayers. As Representative Vicky Hartzler, one of the lawmakers leading the charge, stated, “Taxpayer dollars should never be used to fund the taking of innocent life.”

It is important to note that this issue is not about restricting access to healthcare for members of Congress and their staff. They will still have access to healthcare plans, but these plans should not include coverage for elective abortions. It is a matter of fairness and abiding by the law.

Furthermore, the group of lawmakers has also pointed out that the OPM’s actions are in direct contradiction to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. The ACA clearly states that no federal funds can be used to cover elective abortions. Yet, it seems that this provision is being ignored when it comes to members of Congress and their staff.

The demand to halt taxpayer-funded abortions for members of Congress and their staff is not a new one. In fact, this issue has been brought up multiple times in the past, but no action has been taken. It is time for the OPM to take a stand and uphold the law, rather than turning a blind eye to this violation.

The American people deserve transparency and accountability from their government, especially when it comes to the use of their hard-earned tax dollars. Allowing taxpayer-funded abortions for members of Congress and their staff is a betrayal of the trust placed in these individuals to represent the best interests of their constituents.

In conclusion, the demand by two dozen Republican lawmakers to halt taxpayer-funded abortions for members of Congress and their staff is a necessary step towards upholding the law and protecting the rights of taxpayers. It is time for the OPM to take action and put an end to this violation once and for all. The sanctity of life and the will of the American people must be respected, and it is the responsibility of our government to ensure that this is done.
