Heavy rain lashes high ranges of Kerala; orange alert in four districts

Heavy rain has been lashing the high ranges of Kerala, causing widespread damage and disruption. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in four districts of the state, namely Idukki, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. The heavy downpour has resulted in landslides, flooding, and waterlogging in several areas, leading to the evacuation of people from their homes. The situation is being closely monitored by the authorities, and necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the affected areas.

The heavy rain, which started on Monday, has been relentless, with some areas receiving over 100 mm of rainfall in just a few hours. The IMD has predicted that the rain will continue for the next few days, and the orange alert is expected to remain in place until Thursday. The orange alert signifies that the affected areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, which can cause damage to life and property.

The high ranges of Kerala, known for their scenic beauty and lush greenery, have been hit hard by the heavy rain. The picturesque hill stations of Munnar, Wayanad, and Vagamon have been severely affected, with roads being blocked due to landslides and trees being uprooted. The popular tourist destination of Idukki has also been hit by the heavy rain, with the water level in the Periyar river rising to dangerous levels. The authorities have issued a warning to people living in low-lying areas to move to safer places.

The heavy rain has also caused damage to crops and plantations in the affected areas. The agricultural sector, which is the backbone of Kerala’s economy, has suffered a significant blow due to the heavy downpour. The state government has assured farmers of all necessary assistance and has directed officials to assess the extent of the damage and provide compensation to those affected.

The state disaster management authority has been working round the clock to provide relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts. The timely action taken by the authorities has helped in minimizing the loss of life and property.

The heavy rain has also disrupted the normal life of people in the affected areas. Schools and colleges have been closed, and public transport has been severely affected due to waterlogging on roads. The power supply has also been disrupted in some areas due to the heavy rain and strong winds. However, the state government has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore normalcy in the affected areas at the earliest.

The people of Kerala, known for their resilience and unity, have come together to help those in need. Several voluntary organizations and individuals have been providing food, shelter, and other essential items to the affected people. The spirit of solidarity and compassion shown by the people of Kerala during such difficult times is commendable.

The heavy rain has once again highlighted the need for better disaster management and preparedness in the state. The state government has been taking steps to improve the infrastructure and implement measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The people of Kerala have also been urged to follow safety protocols and be prepared for any emergency situation.

In conclusion, the heavy rain lashing the high ranges of Kerala has caused significant damage and disruption. However, the timely action taken by the authorities and the spirit of unity shown by the people have helped in minimizing the impact of the disaster. The state government, along with the support of the people, is working towards restoring normalcy in the affected areas. Let us all pray for the safety and well-being of the people of Kerala and hope for a speedy recovery from this natural calamity.
