Van Hollen: We Won’t Vote to Open Government Because Trump’s Firing Government Employees

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Arena,” Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) addressed the ongoing government shutdown and explained why Senate Democrats are not willing to vote for a clean continuing resolution.

The government shutdown, which began on December 22nd, has now entered its 33rd day, making it the longest shutdown in U.S. history. The main point of contention between Democrats and Republicans is the funding for President Trump’s proposed border wall. Despite numerous attempts to negotiate and find a compromise, the government remains at a standstill, leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay and crucial government services suspended.

When asked why Senate Democrats won’t vote for a clean continuing resolution, Senator Van Hollen responded by saying, “It’s because we’ve seen what’s happened since day one of the shutdown. President Trump has shown that he is willing to use government employees as bargaining chips and fire them without pay just to get his way.” He went on to explain that Democrats are not willing to cave in to Trump’s demands and enable his reckless behavior.

Senator Van Hollen’s statement highlights the gravity of the situation and the impact it is having on the lives of hard-working Americans. The government shutdown has caused significant disruptions in the lives of federal employees and their families, as well as the millions of people who rely on government services such as food stamps, housing assistance, and small business loans.

The senator’s words also reflect the frustration and disappointment of the American people towards President Trump’s handling of the shutdown. Instead of working towards a solution and putting the well-being of the country first, Trump has chosen to play political games and put his own interests above the needs of the American people.

It is clear that Senate Democrats are taking a principled stand against Trump’s reckless behavior and refusal to reopen the government. They understand the importance of standing up for what is right and not giving in to Trump’s demands, which would only encourage him to use this tactic again in the future.

Furthermore, Senator Van Hollen’s statement also sheds light on the larger issue at hand – the need for a comprehensive immigration reform. Democrats have repeatedly stated that they are willing to work with Republicans to find a solution to the immigration crisis, but building a wall is not the answer. It is a costly and ineffective solution that goes against American values and does nothing to address the root causes of immigration.

In the face of this ongoing crisis, it is heartening to see that Senate Democrats are standing strong and refusing to give in to Trump’s demands. They are showing true leadership and putting the well-being of the country and its citizens first. It is time for Republicans to follow their lead and put an end to this damaging government shutdown.

In conclusion, Senator Van Hollen’s statement on CNN’s “The Arena” perfectly captures the sentiments of Senate Democrats and the American people. They will not vote for a clean continuing resolution because they refuse to enable Trump’s reckless behavior and sacrifice the well-being of government employees. It is time for President Trump to put aside his ego and work towards a solution that will reopen the government and address the immigration crisis in a responsible and effective manner. The American people deserve better, and it is up to our elected officials to deliver.
