Trade Unions stage Bharat Bandh across country, say govt weakening labour rights

The Union Forum, a collective voice for workers’ rights and welfare, has recently criticised the government for not convening an annual labour conference for the past decade. This conference, which brings together representatives from various sectors of the workforce, has been a crucial platform for discussing and addressing issues related to labour laws, working conditions, and employment opportunities. The absence of this conference for such a long period has raised concerns among the workers’ community and has been seen as a neglect of their rights and needs.

The annual labour conference, also known as the National Tripartite Consultative Council (NTCC), has been a tradition in our country for over 50 years. It serves as a forum for tripartite dialogue between the government, employers’ organisations, and trade unions. The primary objective of this conference is to discuss and formulate policies that promote social justice, protect workers’ rights, and ensure a fair and conducive working environment for all. It is also an opportunity for the government to receive feedback and suggestions from the workers’ representatives on issues affecting their daily lives.

However, the Union Forum has expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to hold this conference for the past ten years. According to them, this has resulted in a lack of progress in addressing the pressing issues faced by workers in our country. The forum has highlighted several issues that need urgent attention, such as the implementation of minimum wage laws, protection of workers’ rights in the informal sector, and the rising unemployment rate among the youth.

The absence of the annual labour conference has also hindered the effective implementation of labour laws and policies. Without a platform for dialogue and consultation, the concerns and grievances of the workers have gone unheard. This has led to a sense of frustration and disillusionment among the workers, who feel that their voices are not being heard by the government.

The Union Forum has called on the government to take immediate action and convene the annual labour conference without any further delay. They have emphasised the importance of this conference in promoting social dialogue and finding solutions to the challenges faced by the workforce. The forum has also urged the government to involve all stakeholders, including the workers’ representatives, in the decision-making process to ensure a fair and inclusive approach.

In response to the criticism, the government has acknowledged the importance of the annual labour conference and has assured that it will be convened at the earliest. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has stated that preparations are underway to hold the conference in the coming months. The government has also expressed its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the Union Forum and has assured that the workers’ welfare is a top priority.

The Union Forum has welcomed the government’s response and has expressed hope that the annual labour conference will be held soon. They have also urged the government to make this conference a regular and timely event to avoid any future disruptions in the dialogue between the stakeholders. The forum has also called for a more proactive approach from the government in addressing the issues faced by the workers and ensuring their rights are protected.

In conclusion, the absence of the annual labour conference for the past decade has been a cause of concern for the workers’ community. It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to convene this conference and address the pressing issues faced by the workforce. The Union Forum has played a crucial role in highlighting these issues and has called for a collaborative effort between the government, employers, and workers to find sustainable solutions. Let us hope that the government takes prompt action and works towards creating a better and more equitable working environment for all.
