Environmental norms being violated in Kedarnath, anti-pollution body issues notices

The Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board (UKPCB) has taken a commendable step towards preserving the natural beauty of Kedarnath by issuing notices to the concerned authorities. These notices were issued in compliance with an order issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), after a joint team of officials from different departments, including the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), inspected the solid-waste management and sewage-disposal mechanism in Kedarnath and found serious faults with it.

Kedarnath, a picturesque town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, is not only a popular pilgrimage site but also a major tourist destination. However, the increasing number of tourists has led to a significant rise in the generation of solid waste and sewage, posing a threat to the fragile ecosystem of the region. The recent inspection by the joint team of officials revealed that the existing waste management and sewage disposal system in Kedarnath is inadequate and needs immediate attention.

The UKPCB, being the apex body responsible for monitoring and controlling pollution in Uttarakhand, has taken swift action to address this issue. The notices issued by the board are a clear indication of their commitment towards protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development in the state. The NGT’s order has further strengthened their efforts and provided a legal backing to their actions.

The joint team of officials, during their inspection, found serious faults with the solid-waste management system in Kedarnath. It was observed that the waste generated by the tourists and locals was not being disposed of properly, leading to littering and pollution of the surrounding areas. The team also found that the sewage disposal mechanism was inadequate and needed immediate improvement. The untreated sewage was being discharged into the nearby water bodies, causing contamination and posing a threat to the health of the local community and the ecosystem.

The UKPCB, in its notices, has directed the concerned authorities to take necessary measures to address these issues. The board has also asked for a detailed report on the current waste management and sewage disposal system in Kedarnath, along with a plan of action to improve it. The authorities have been given a strict deadline to comply with the directives, failing which, legal action will be taken against them.

The UKPCB’s actions have been widely appreciated by environmentalists and local residents. It is heartening to see that the board is taking proactive steps to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the state. The NGT’s order has further boosted the morale of the board, and they are determined to ensure that the directives are followed strictly.

The notices issued by the UKPCB are a wake-up call for all of us. It is a reminder that we need to be more responsible towards our environment and take necessary steps to preserve it for future generations. The increasing number of tourists in Kedarnath is a testament to its popularity, but it also brings with it the responsibility of maintaining the sanctity of the place. It is our duty to ensure that our actions do not harm the environment and the local community.

The UKPCB’s efforts to improve the waste management and sewage disposal system in Kedarnath will not only benefit the environment but also boost the tourism industry in the region. A clean and well-maintained environment will attract more tourists, leading to economic growth and employment opportunities for the locals. It is a win-win situation for everyone, and we must all support the UKPCB in their endeavors.

In conclusion, the notices issued by the UKPCB in compliance with the NGT’s order are a step in the right direction. It is heartening to see that the board is taking proactive measures to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the state. It is now up to the concerned authorities to comply with the directives and work towards improving the waste management and sewage disposal system in Kedarnath. Let us all join hands and contribute towards preserving the natural beauty of Kedarnath for future generations.
