The National Archives to establish new hub for community-led research in the cultural heritage sector

Staff working in galleries, libraries, archives and museums around the UK are about to receive a much-needed boost in resources for community-led research projects. The National Archives has been awarded a generous £1 million by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support their newly launched project, Spaces, Places, and Belonging.

This exciting initiative will provide a unique opportunity for staff working in these cultural institutions to collaborate with communities and explore their shared heritage and identities. Through this partnership, the project aims to create a better understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and histories, and ultimately promote a sense of belonging and inclusivity.

The AHRC’s investment in this project is a testament to the importance of research in understanding and celebrating the rich and diverse cultural landscape of the UK. This support will enable staff to embark on community-led research projects that may have otherwise been impossible due to lack of resources.

The Spaces, Places, and Belonging project will not only benefit staff working in cultural institutions, but it also has the potential to positively impact communities across the UK. By involving the public in the research process, the project aims to promote a sense of ownership and engagement in our shared history and heritage.

One of the key objectives of the project is to foster a sense of belonging among communities. In a society that is becoming increasingly diverse, it is crucial to create spaces where people feel welcomed and valued. By exploring our collective histories, the Spaces, Places, and Belonging project will contribute to building a more inclusive and tolerant society.

The National Archives, with their expertise in preserving and providing access to historical records, is the perfect partner for this project. Their vast collection of documents, maps, and photographs provide a wealth of resources for researchers to uncover the hidden histories of communities across the UK. With the AHRC funding, the National Archives will be able to support staff in developing innovative and engaging research projects that showcase the hidden gems of our shared heritage.

The Spaces, Places, and Belonging project is an excellent opportunity for staff working in cultural institutions to collaborate with each other and with the community. By breaking down barriers and promoting cross-institutional partnerships, this project will create a network of cultural institutions working towards a common goal of celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity.

The AHRC’s investment in this project also highlights the importance of preserving and promoting our collective cultural heritage. By providing resources and support for community-led research, the project will contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared past. This, in turn, will help to strengthen our individual and collective identities and promote a sense of belonging in our rapidly changing society.

Moreover, the Spaces, Places, and Belonging project has the potential to inspire future generations to get involved in researching and preserving our cultural heritage. By showcasing the work of staff in cultural institutions and the communities they work with, the project will encourage young people to take an interest in their own history and heritage, and possibly pursue a career in the cultural sector.

In conclusion, the £1 million award by the AHRC to The National Archives for the Spaces, Places, and Belonging project is a significant investment in our collective cultural heritage. It not only provides much-needed resources for community-led research but also promotes a sense of belonging and inclusivity. This project has the potential to bring people together, celebrate our diverse histories, and inspire future generations to continue the important work of preserving and promoting our cultural heritage.
