‘North Pole’ flight takes kids to Santa in transformed Denver airport hangar

Denver, Colorado – The holiday season is a time for spreading joy and giving back, and in Denver, it was taken to new heights. On Saturday, dozens of children gathered at Denver International Airport, eagerly waiting to board a festively decorated plane. Little did they know, their destination would be none other than the magical North Pole.

Over 100 children, some of whom have serious health issues, were treated to a special flight near the city, before landing back at the airport. As the plane was towed to a hangar, the children were amazed to find it transformed into a winter wonderland, thanks to the efforts of United Airlines employees and volunteers.

The inside of the plane was adorned with streamers, paper snowflakes, and cotton resembling feathery snow. The flight crew paraded a bubble machine up and down the aisle, to the delight of the excited children. Holiday songs played in the background, and there were apple snacks and juice for all to enjoy.

But the real surprise awaited the children upon landing. As they were asked to close their window shades, they eagerly waited to see what was in store for them. And when they opened their shades, they were greeted by the sight of Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with a team of elves. An ice cream truck was also on hand, and each child received a special gift.

Bryce Bosley, a 6-year-old who was on the flight, couldn’t contain his excitement. “The North Pole is fun because there’s games, food, and all the activities are really fun,” he exclaimed.

Captain Bob Zimmermann, the pilot of the holiday flight, was deeply moved by the joy and wonder of the children. “Throughout the year, I’ll think of the fantasy flight,” he shared. “When life seems tough, or I want to complain about something, I remember these kids and the joy and love they bring. It helps me keep things in perspective.”

The holiday flight was made possible through a partnership between United Airlines and various organizations, including Make-A-Wish Colorado, Girls Inc., Children’s Hospital Colorado, and Rocky Mountain Down Syndrome Association. Children from the Denver area, aged between 3 to 10 years, were invited to be a part of this magical experience.

This is not the first time United Airlines has organized such a special flight. For over 30 years, they have been staging “fantasy flights” to fictional North Poles at airports around the world, bringing holiday cheer to children and their families. This year, the flights took place in 13 cities, starting from Honolulu on December 5th and culminating in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday.

Jonna McGrath, United’s Vice President for operations at its Denver hub, has been a part of 29 fantasy flights and considers it one of her favorite days of the year. “It gives them a day where they are away from some of the challenges they face in their day-to-day life,” she shared while dressed as an elf. “Bringing a little magic and some gifts to their holiday season is something they’ll never forget.”

The fantasy flight to the North Pole is not just a fun day out for these children, but also a chance to escape from their daily struggles and enjoy the holiday season like any other child. For many of them, this may be the only time they get to experience such a magical journey.

As we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is heartwarming to see organizations like United Airlines taking the time to spread joy and bring smiles to the faces of these children. The fantasy flight to the North Pole is a reminder of the true spirit of the holidays – giving, kindness, and creating cherished memories.

We can all take a lesson from this magical experience and find ways to spread joy and make a difference in the lives of those around us, especially during this festive season. Let us all remember the true meaning of the holidays and spread love and happiness wherever we go.
