Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and a tribute to Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat

Kashi, also known as Varanasi, is a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is revered as a holy city by Hindus. The city’s connection with Tamil people and culture runs deep, as it is the home of the famous Baba Vishwanath temple. Similarly, Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India, is home to the holy town of Rameswaram. Both these places hold great significance in Hindu mythology and are an important part of the cultural fabric of India.

Kashi, also known as the city of Lord Shiva, is believed to have been founded by Lord Shiva himself. It is said that Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati, chose Kashi as their abode and have been residing there ever since. The city is also known as the city of moksha (liberation) and is believed to be the ultimate destination for every Hindu’s soul. It is said that a person who dies in Kashi attains salvation and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Baba Vishwanath temple, located in the heart of Kashi, is one of the most famous and revered temples in India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (radiant sign of Lord Shiva) in the country. The temple attracts millions of devotees every year, who come to seek blessings and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. The temple complex is a bustling hub of spirituality and is a sight to behold during festivals like Mahashivratri and Diwali.

The connection between Kashi and Tamil people can be traced back to the ancient times when Tamil saints and poets, known as Nayanars, visited the city to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. These saints composed beautiful hymns and songs in praise of Lord Shiva, which are still recited by devotees in the temple. The Tamil language and culture have been deeply ingrained in the fabric of Kashi, and one can find many Tamil-speaking communities living in the city.

Similarly, Rameswaram, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is known for its beautiful beaches, but more importantly, it is home to the famous Ramanathaswamy temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be the place where Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, established a lingam (symbol of Lord Shiva) to seek forgiveness for his actions during the war with Ravana. The temple is also known for its 22 holy water tanks, where devotees take a dip to cleanse their sins.

The connection between Rameswaram and Kashi can be seen in the form of the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga, which is believed to be the southernmost Jyotirlinga in India. It is said that a pilgrimage to Rameswaram is incomplete without a visit to Kashi, and vice versa. This shows the deep cultural and spiritual connection between these two places.

Apart from the religious significance, Kashi and Tamil Nadu also share a rich cultural heritage. Both these places are known for their traditional music, dance, and art forms. The famous Bharatanatyam dance form, which originated in Tamil Nadu, is widely practiced and performed in Kashi as well. The city of Kashi has also been a hub for learning and education, and many Tamil scholars and poets have studied and taught in the city.

The cuisine of both these places also reflects their cultural connection. The famous South Indian dosa and idli are popular street food in Kashi, and the city is also known for its mouth-watering sweets like jalebi and lassi. Similarly, the traditional Tamil cuisine, with its blend of flavors and spices, is a favorite among the people of Kashi.

In conclusion, the connection between Kashi and Tamil people and culture runs deep and has been nurtured over centuries. These two places, though located in different parts of the country, are united in their devotion to Lord Shiva and their rich cultural heritage. The spiritual and cultural bond between these two places is a testament to the diversity and unity of India, and it is something that should be celebrated and cherished by all.
