Pupils in North East England get hands-on with history

Our First Education Service: Bringing History to the North East

The North East of England is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. From the iconic Angel of the North to the bustling cities of Newcastle and Sunderland, this region has always been a hub of creativity and innovation. However, when it comes to accessing historical records and artifacts, young people in the North East have often faced the challenge of having to travel to London. But now, thanks to an exciting partnership between Tyne & Wear Archives and the Discovery Museum, this will no longer be the case.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our first education service in the North East, in collaboration with North East Museums. This new opportunity will allow young people to work with our historic records and artifacts without having to leave their hometowns. This is a significant step towards making history more accessible and inclusive for all.

The idea for this partnership was born out of a shared passion for preserving and promoting our region’s history. Gillian Johnston, Education and Outreach Officer at Tyne & Wear Archives, expressed her excitement about this collaboration, saying, “We are delighted to be working with North East Museums to bring our education service to the North East. This partnership will not only make our archives more accessible but also provide a unique learning experience for young people in the region.”

The education service will offer a range of workshops and activities for students of all ages, from primary school to college. These sessions will be tailored to suit the curriculum and will cover various topics, including local history, industrial heritage, and social change. Students will have the opportunity to handle original documents and artifacts, giving them a hands-on experience of working with historical records.

The Discovery Museum, located in the heart of Newcastle, will be the base for this education service. With its interactive displays and exhibitions, the museum is the perfect setting for students to explore and learn about the past. The partnership between Tyne & Wear Archives and the Discovery Museum is a testament to the commitment of both organizations towards making history more engaging and relevant for young people.

One of the main advantages of this education service is that it eliminates the need for students to travel to London to access historical records. This not only saves time and money but also makes it possible for students from all backgrounds to participate in these workshops. It also provides a platform for local schools and colleges to collaborate and share resources, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

The launch of this education service is a significant milestone for both Tyne & Wear Archives and North East Museums. It marks the beginning of a new era of collaboration and innovation in the field of education and heritage. We hope that this partnership will inspire other organizations to come together and work towards making history more accessible and engaging for young people.

We are confident that this education service will have a positive impact on the students in the North East. It will not only enhance their understanding of the region’s history but also develop their critical thinking and research skills. By working with original documents and artifacts, students will be able to connect with the past in a meaningful way, making history come alive for them.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tyne & Wear Archives and the Discovery Museum for their support and enthusiasm in making this partnership a reality. We are excited to see the positive impact this education service will have on the students of the North East and look forward to welcoming them to our workshops and activities.

In conclusion, our first education service in the North East is a significant step towards making history more accessible and engaging for young people. We are proud to be working with Tyne & Wear Archives and the Discovery Museum to bring this opportunity to the region. We hope that this partnership will inspire and empower the next generation to explore and preserve our rich cultural heritage.
