Dem Rep. Bynum: Don’t Know Details of Portland Shooting, Know Border Patrol Engaging in ‘Terrorism’

In a recent interview on CNN’s “OutFront,” Representative Janelle Bynum (D-OR) addressed the shooting incident involving Border Patrol agents in Portland. While she admitted to not having all the details of the incident, she strongly condemned the presence of Border Patrol agents in the city and accused them of engaging in “terrorism.”

The shooting incident, which occurred on Thursday, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the role of Border Patrol agents in cities where they are not typically stationed. According to reports, Border Patrol agents opened fire on a suspect who was allegedly throwing rocks at them. The suspect was injured and taken to the hospital, but his condition is currently unknown.

Representative Bynum’s comments on the incident reflect the growing tension between the federal government and local communities over the presence of Border Patrol agents. Many cities, including Portland, have declared themselves as sanctuary cities, refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. This has led to clashes between local law enforcement and federal agents, as well as protests from community members.

During the interview, Representative Bynum expressed her concern about the use of force by Border Patrol agents, stating that “we know that their presence is not welcome.” She also went on to say that the incident was a clear example of the “terrorizing tactics” used by Border Patrol agents in communities like Portland.

Her comments have been met with support from other lawmakers and community leaders who have long been critical of the actions of Border Patrol agents. They argue that the presence of federal agents in cities like Portland only serves to create fear and mistrust among residents, particularly those from immigrant communities.

However, it is important to note that the shooting incident is still under investigation and the full details have yet to be released. It is premature to label the actions of Border Patrol agents as “terrorism” without a thorough investigation and understanding of the situation.

Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge the difficult and dangerous job that Border Patrol agents have in protecting our borders and enforcing immigration laws. While there have been instances of misconduct and excessive use of force by some agents, it is unfair to paint all agents with the same brush.

In response to the incident, the Border Patrol has released a statement saying that they are committed to working with local law enforcement and community leaders to address any concerns and build trust within the community. They also emphasized that their agents are trained to use appropriate force when necessary to protect themselves and others.

In conclusion, the shooting incident in Portland has once again brought attention to the complex and controversial issue of immigration enforcement in our country. While it is important to hold law enforcement accountable for their actions, it is equally important to have a productive and respectful dialogue to find solutions that work for everyone. Labeling the actions of Border Patrol agents as “terrorism” only serves to further divide and polarize our communities. Let us instead focus on finding ways to work together and create a safer and more inclusive society for all.
