Trump says Russia and Ukraine closer than ever to peace deal

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again expressed his country’s unwavering commitment to achieving peace, while Russia remained steadfast in their demands over the disputed regions of Donbas and Crimea. In a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness for dialogue and compromise, in hopes of finding a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict.

The meeting between the two leaders was closely watched by the international community, as tensions between Ukraine and Russia have been escalating in recent months. The conflict, which began in 2014, has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and the displacement of millions of people.

In his address to the media following the meeting, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s top priority is to end the bloodshed and establish lasting peace in the region. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to the Minsk agreements, a set of peace agreements signed in 2014 and 2015, which aim to restore Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and grant more autonomy to the separatist-held regions of Donbas.

However, Zelenskyy also made it clear that any resolution must be based on the principle of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, meaning the return of Crimea to Ukrainian control. “We must not forget that Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine, and it must be returned to its rightful owner,” Zelenskyy stated.

On the other hand, President Putin maintained Russia’s position, calling for direct dialogue between the Ukrainian government and the separatist leaders in Donbas. He also reiterated that the people of Crimea exercised their right to self-determination when they voted to join Russia in a controversial referendum in 2014.

Despite these differences, both leaders agreed to continue discussions and seek a peaceful resolution. Zelenskyy also emphasized the need for international supervision and support in the negotiations, stating, “We need the world’s assistance in finding a solution that is acceptable to all parties involved.”

The European Union and the United States have been closely involved in efforts to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. They have welcomed the meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, calling it a positive step towards de-escalation and dialogue. The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed hope that the meeting would lead to “concrete results.”

Furthermore, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of Russia’s withdrawal from Crimea and the full implementation of the Minsk agreements. He also urged both sides to prioritize the well-being of the people of Donbas and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin is a significant development in the ongoing conflict that has divided the two countries. It shows a willingness on both sides to engage in dialogue and work towards finding a solution. While the road to peace may be long and challenging, this meeting is a step in the right direction.

Ukraine’s commitment to peace and its unwavering stance on the return of Crimea demonstrate the country’s determination to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The international community must continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In conclusion, President Zelenskyy’s call for dialogue and compromise, and Russia’s willingness to engage in discussions, offer hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Donbas and the annexation of Crimea. With the support of the international community, there is a chance for the long-suffering people of Ukraine and the region to finally achieve the lasting peace they deserve. As President Zelenskyy stated, “Peace is always worth fighting for, and we will continue to do so until it is achieved.”
