The household names to turn down gongs from the Queen or King with New Year’s honours list due

Being bestowed an honour by the monarch is a true accomplishment. It is a recognition of one’s significant contributions and achievements in various fields, including arts, sciences, community service, and more. For many, receiving an honour from Buckingham Palace is considered the ultimate form of recognition and is known to be one of the most prestigious awards in the world. However, it may come as a surprise that there are a number of well-known individuals who have declined the opportunity to receive such an honour. But why would anyone turn down an honour from the monarch? Let’s take a closer look at this phenomenon.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that receiving an honour from the monarch is not a decision one can make on their own. It is a process that involves recommendations from the government and a rigorous assessment by the Honours and Appointments Secretariat. This means that even if one is highly deserving of an honour, they may not receive it due to various factors. Moreover, some individuals may not align with the idea of the monarchy or may have personal reasons for rejecting the honour.

One such example is the renowned British comedian and actor, Stephen Fry. In 2003, he was offered a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to the entertainment industry. However, Fry, who is an open critic of the monarchy and has been vocal about his support for a republic, turned down the honour. Despite his witty response stating that he “loves the idea and being a commander sounds very cool,” he declined the offer as he believed it was not fitting for him to receive an honour from the very institution he has criticized.

Similarly, the iconic fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, also rejected the damehood (DBE) offered to her in 2006. Despite being a fashion icon and an influential figure in the industry, Westwood turned down the honour, stating that she did not want to become a part of the establishment that she had always challenged through her work. She further explained that she believes in taking action rather than waiting for an honour to be bestowed upon her.

These examples highlight that rejecting an honour from the monarch does not necessarily mean disrespect towards the monarchy or the institution. In fact, it can be seen as a form of standing up for one’s beliefs and principles. This sentiment is echoed by iconic singer-songwriter David Bowie, who turned down a knighthood in 2003. Bowie, who is known for pushing boundaries and challenging the norm, stated that he did not see himself as a part of the establishment and preferred to keep his artistic integrity intact.

Moreover, there are also individuals who have declined honours due to their personal beliefs and convictions. Notable names include the renowned writer and activist, Roald Dahl, and renowned historian, A.J.P. Taylor. Both these individuals, despite being highly deserving of an honour, refused to accept it as they did not believe in the idea of state honours.

On the other hand, there have also been cases where individuals have declined the honour due to timing or other commitments. Sportspersons, who are often offered an honour after winning major tournaments, may decline due to the conflicts with their training schedules or other competitions. This was the case with Andy Murray, who turned down a knighthood offered to him after winning his second Wimbledon title in 2016. He believed that the timing was not right and he wanted to focus on his training.

In essence, rejecting an honour from Buckingham Palace does not diminish one’s achievements or contributions. In fact, it can be seen as a testament to their principles, beliefs, and individuality. As Stephen Fry once said, “the greatest honour isn’t in the honour itself, but in being deserving of it.” And for those who have turned down an honour, it is clear that their achievements and contributions speak volumes and do not need validation from anyone.

Moreover, declining an honour should not be seen as a negative or disrespectful act. It should be celebrated as a demonstration of personal integrity and the freedom to make one’s own choices. It is a reminder that true honour lies in staying true to oneself and not conforming to societal expectations.

In conclusion, receiving an honour from the monarch is a significant achievement, and those who have been honoured should be proud of their accomplishments. However, it is also essential to respect the decisions of those who may choose to decline the honour. Ultimately, it is not about
