Simone Tata passes away in Mumbai at 95

In the world of beauty and fashion, there are few names that have left a lasting impact and have become synonymous with success. One such name is Simone Tata, the woman who is known as the driving force behind the success of Lakmé, India’s leading cosmetic brand. Her visionary leadership and relentless efforts not only made Lakmé a household name but also laid the foundation for fashion retail in India with the establishment of the Westside chain.

Born in Switzerland in 1931, Simone Tata moved to India after marrying Naval Tata, the son of the renowned industrialist J.R.D. Tata. Despite being a foreigner in a new country, Simone embraced the Indian culture and went on to become one of the most influential businesswomen in the country. Her journey with Lakmé began in 1956 when she joined the company as a director.

At that time, the Indian cosmetic market was dominated by international brands, and there was a lack of awareness and availability of local products. Simone Tata recognized this gap and saw an opportunity to create a brand that would cater to the needs of Indian women. Under her leadership, Lakmé launched its first range of beauty products in 1959, and there was no looking back.

Simone Tata’s vision was to make Lakmé a brand that not only offered quality products but also celebrated the diverse beauty of Indian women. She introduced a range of colors that were specifically curated for the Indian skin tone, making Lakmé the go-to brand for every Indian woman. She also believed in the power of advertising and launched several iconic campaigns that resonated with the Indian audience and established Lakmé as a household name.

Apart from her contribution to the growth of Lakmé, Simone Tata also played a crucial role in shaping the fashion retail industry in India. In 1998, she launched the first Westside store in Mumbai, which was a one-stop-shop for all fashion needs. With its affordable yet trendy clothing, Westside quickly became a favorite among the Indian youth. Today, the brand has over 150 stores across the country and continues to be a leader in the fashion retail space.

Simone Tata’s success with Lakmé and Westside is a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen. She not only understood the needs and desires of the Indian consumers but also had a keen eye for market trends and innovations. Her relentless efforts and determination have paved the way for other Indian brands to thrive and compete with international giants.

Apart from her professional achievements, Simone Tata was also known for her philanthropy and social work. She was actively involved in various initiatives and charities that focused on women empowerment and education. Her passion for giving back to society and making a positive impact on people’s lives is truly inspiring.

In 2018, Simone Tata was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence, recognizing her immense contribution to the Indian business landscape. Her legacy continues to live on, and she will always be remembered as a pioneer in the beauty and fashion industry.

In conclusion, Simone Tata’s journey with Lakmé and Westside has been nothing short of remarkable. Her unwavering determination and passion have not only made her an icon in the business world but also a role model for aspiring entrepreneurs. She will always be remembered as the woman who changed the face of the Indian beauty and fashion industry and laid the foundation for future generations to build upon.
