Sen. Mark Kelly Slammed for Post Responding to Shooting of National Guardsmen

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona has found himself at the center of controversy after a recent social media post. The post in question was a response to the tragic shooting of two West Virginia National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C. While the intention behind the post was to show support and condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, it was met with criticism and backlash.

On July 7th, 2021, Senator Kelly took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the shooting, stating, “Thinking of the families of the two West Virginia National Guardsmen who were shot this morning while protecting our nation’s capital. My heart goes out to them and their loved ones.” This seemingly innocent and heartfelt message was quickly met with negative responses from many social media users.

Critics of Senator Kelly’s post accused him of using the tragedy as a political opportunity and questioned his sincerity. Some even went as far as to call his post “disrespectful” and “insincere.” This backlash sparked a heated debate on social media, with many defending Senator Kelly and others condemning him.

One of the main points of contention was the timing of Senator Kelly’s post. Many believed that it was too soon to be using a tragedy for political gain. However, it is important to note that Senator Kelly’s post came hours after the shooting and before any details or motives were known. It is unfair to assume that his post was politically motivated without any evidence to support such claims.

Furthermore, Senator Kelly has a personal connection to the military, as he is a retired Navy captain and former astronaut. He understands the sacrifices and risks that come with serving our country, and his post was likely a genuine expression of sympathy and support for the fallen soldiers and their families.

In response to the criticism, Senator Kelly’s team released a statement saying, “Senator Kelly’s heart goes out to the families of the two fallen soldiers and all those affected by this tragedy. He was simply expressing his condolences and support during a difficult time.” This statement reinforces the fact that Senator Kelly’s post was not meant to be political in any way.

It is also worth noting that Senator Kelly has a history of supporting the military and their families. During his time in the Senate, he has advocated for better pay and benefits for service members and has worked to address issues such as veteran homelessness and mental health. It is clear that Senator Kelly has a genuine concern for the well-being of our military personnel and their families.

In conclusion, Senator Mark Kelly’s post responding to the shooting of two West Virginia National Guardsmen was met with unwarranted criticism. His intentions were pure, and his post was a sincere expression of sympathy and support. It is important to remember that tragedies should not be used for political gain, but that does not mean we should refrain from showing compassion and support for those affected. Let us come together in times of tragedy, rather than tearing each other apart.
