Sectoral regulators must now assess preparedness to AI challenges, says IIT-Madras’ B Ravindran

The Indian government’s recently released guidelines on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been widely praised for combining the best of both worlds- the flexibility of the United States and the ethical approach of the European Union.

The Drafting Committee’s Chairman, Mr. Pranav Mahajan, has stated that the guidelines are a result of in-depth research and consultation with various stakeholders, both domestic and international. These guidelines aim to provide a comprehensive framework for the development and use of AI in India, while also addressing potential ethical concerns.

One of the key features of the new guidelines is their flexibility, which has been lauded by experts. This approach is in line with the US model, which focuses on promoting innovation and growth in the field of AI. The guidelines do not impose strict regulations, but rather provide a broad framework for the responsible development and application of AI technologies.

At the same time, the guidelines also take into account the ethical concerns surrounding AI. The EU has been at the forefront of addressing these concerns and has set strict regulations in place for the use of AI. India’s new guidelines adopt a similar approach by emphasizing the need for ethical considerations in the development of AI.

Speaking on this, Mr. Mahajan said, “We believe that AI has the potential to bring about significant progress and development in various sectors. However, it is crucial to ensure that its development and use is in line with ethical values and does not harm individuals or society as a whole.”

The guidelines also highlight the importance of promoting the use of AI for the benefit of all sections of society. This includes promoting the use of AI in healthcare, agriculture, education, and other key sectors that can have a positive impact on people’s lives.

In addition to promoting the responsible use of AI, the guidelines also focus on building a robust ecosystem for its development. This includes setting up centers of excellence, providing training and support to startups, and promoting collaboration between industry, academia, and the government.

The government has also taken into consideration the potential impact of AI on employment. The guidelines stress the need for upskilling and reskilling of the workforce to adapt to the changing landscape of the job market. They also encourage the use of AI to create new job opportunities and boost economic growth.

India’s new AI guidelines have garnered praise from both domestic and international experts, who see it as a positive step towards promoting innovation and responsible development in the field of AI. It is believed that these guidelines will not only benefit India but also serve as a model for other countries looking to develop their own AI policies.

The government, on its part, has also assured that the guidelines will be regularly reviewed and updated to keep up with the rapidly changing technology landscape. This will ensure that India remains at the forefront of AI development while also upholding ethical values and promoting inclusive growth.

In conclusion, India’s new AI guidelines have struck the perfect balance between promoting innovation and addressing ethical concerns. With its flexibility and focus on responsible development, these guidelines are poised to pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for the country.
