Mark Drakeford says his electoral system a reason why Reform UK won’t win power in Wales

The former First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, has made a bold claim about the new electoral system that he helped to introduce. According to Jones, this new system will prevent Reform UK from ever forming a government in Wales. This statement has sparked a lot of interest and debate among the people of Wales, as well as political analysts and experts.

The new electoral system, known as the Single Transferable Vote (STV), was introduced in Wales in 2021. It replaces the previous First Past the Post (FPTP) system, which has been in place for decades. The STV system is a form of proportional representation, where voters rank their preferred candidates in order of preference. This means that instead of just voting for one candidate, voters now have the opportunity to rank multiple candidates in their constituency.

One of the main reasons for introducing the STV system was to ensure fairer representation in the Welsh government. Under the FPTP system, smaller parties like Reform UK often struggled to gain any seats in the Welsh Assembly, despite receiving a significant number of votes. This led to a lack of diversity and representation in the government, as well as a feeling of disenfranchisement among voters.

However, with the new STV system, smaller parties like Reform UK have a better chance of gaining seats in the Welsh Assembly. This is because the system takes into account the second and third preferences of voters, which can ultimately lead to a more proportional distribution of seats. This is a major win for democracy in Wales, as it ensures that every vote counts and that the government truly reflects the will of the people.

But what does this mean for Reform UK? Well, according to Carwyn Jones, it means that they will never be able to form a government in Wales. This is a bold statement, but one that is backed by the numbers. Under the FPTP system, Reform UK only managed to secure one seat in the Welsh Assembly in the 2016 election. However, with the new STV system, they would need to significantly increase their vote share in order to gain any seats at all.

Jones believes that this is highly unlikely, as the STV system makes it much harder for smaller parties to gain a foothold in the government. He also points out that the STV system encourages collaboration and coalition-building, which is something that Reform UK has been known to struggle with in the past. This means that even if they do manage to gain a few seats, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to form a majority government.

Of course, this claim by Jones has been met with some skepticism. Some argue that it is too early to make such a bold statement, as the STV system has only been in place for a few months. Others believe that it is unfair to completely write off a party and their chances of forming a government. However, one thing is for sure – the new STV system has definitely changed the political landscape in Wales.

In conclusion, the former First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, has made a strong claim about the new electoral system in Wales. According to him, the STV system will prevent smaller parties like Reform UK from ever forming a government. While this claim may be met with some skepticism, there is no denying that the STV system has brought about a much-needed change in the Welsh political scene. It ensures fairer representation and gives a voice to smaller parties, while also promoting collaboration and coalition-building. Only time will tell if Jones’ claim holds true, but for now, the people of Wales can rest assured that their voices will be heard and their votes will truly count.
