We are looking for durable relations with India: Dutch minister Robert Tieman

The Netherlands, known for its innovative and sustainable approach to shipping, is now looking to expand its expertise to India. Along with promoting green and digital shipping, the Dutch are keen to offer their shipbuilding knowledge to India, in a bid to strengthen the maritime industry in both countries.

The Netherlands has always been a pioneer in the field of shipping, with its strategic location and advanced infrastructure. The country has a long history of shipbuilding, dating back to the 17th century when it was one of the world’s leading shipbuilding nations. Today, the Dutch continue to lead the way in the shipping industry, with a strong focus on sustainability and digitalization.

One of the key areas of collaboration between the Netherlands and India is green shipping. The Dutch have been at the forefront of promoting sustainable practices in the shipping industry, with a goal to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. With India being one of the fastest-growing maritime nations, there is a huge potential for both countries to work together towards a greener future.

The Netherlands has already made significant progress in this area, with initiatives such as the Green Deal for Shipping and the Green Maritime Methanol project. These initiatives aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the shipping industry by promoting the use of alternative fuels and implementing energy-efficient technologies. By sharing their expertise and knowledge, the Dutch can help India in its efforts to adopt sustainable practices in the shipping sector.

Another area of collaboration is digital shipping. The Netherlands is a leader in digitalization, with its advanced port infrastructure and use of innovative technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence. By leveraging these technologies, the Dutch have been able to increase efficiency and reduce costs in the shipping industry. This is something that India can benefit from, as it looks to modernize its ports and increase its competitiveness in the global market.

The Dutch are also keen to offer their shipbuilding expertise to India. The Netherlands has a strong reputation for building high-quality and technologically advanced vessels. With India’s growing demand for ships, there is a great opportunity for collaboration between the two countries. The Dutch shipbuilding industry can help India in building state-of-the-art vessels, while also providing training and knowledge transfer to Indian shipbuilders.

Moreover, this collaboration between the Netherlands and India can also boost trade and economic ties between the two countries. The Netherlands is already one of India’s top trading partners in Europe, with a bilateral trade of over 10 billion euros. By working together in the maritime industry, both countries can further enhance their trade relations and open up new opportunities for business and investment.

The Dutch government and maritime organizations are actively promoting this collaboration between the two countries. In 2019, a Dutch trade mission consisting of over 50 companies visited India to explore opportunities in the maritime sector. This mission was a success, with several agreements and partnerships being signed between Dutch and Indian companies.

In addition to this, the Netherlands and India have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of maritime technology. This MoU aims to facilitate exchange of information and expertise in areas such as shipbuilding, port development, and maritime education and training.

The Indian government has also taken steps to promote collaboration with the Netherlands in the maritime sector. In 2019, the Ministry of Shipping signed an MoU with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to cooperate in the areas of port development and maritime transport.

In conclusion, the Netherlands is not only a leader in green and digital shipping, but also a valuable partner for India in the field of shipbuilding. With their shared commitment towards sustainability and innovation, this collaboration between the two countries has the potential to bring about significant positive changes in the maritime industry. It is a partnership that is not only beneficial for both countries, but also for the global shipping community as a whole. Let us look forward to a bright and prosperous future for the Netherlands and India in the maritime sector.
