In light of recent events surrounding the strict enforcement of immigration policies, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have taken a bold and necessary stand. On Tuesday, the board unanimously approved a declaration to declare a state of emergency over the arrests of illegal aliens by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
This decision, which was met with widespread support and praise, sends a powerful message to our immigrant community – we stand with you and will do everything in our power to protect you. With ICE agents ramping up their efforts to detain and deport undocumented individuals, many of whom have been living in our communities for years and established a strong, vibrant presence, this declaration could not have come at a more critical time.
As Supervisor Hilda Solis stated, “We are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis unlike anything we have seen in recent history. Children are being separated from their parents, families are being torn apart, and fear is gripping our communities. As elected officials, we have a responsibility to protect and serve all of our residents, regardless of their immigration status.”
And that is exactly what the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have done. By declaring a state of emergency, they have essentially put a stop to ICE’s aggressive tactics that have caused chaos and fear within our immigrant community. This declaration not only provides protection to undocumented individuals, but also allows the county to allocate resources to assist those who have been impacted by ICE arrests.
Unfortunately, the Trump administration’s immigration policies have only added to the already complicated and difficult immigration system in our country. And since President Trump took office, the number of ICE arrests of undocumented individuals who have no criminal record has more than doubled. This has caused unprecedented fear and uncertainty within our immigrant community, with many individuals afraid to leave their homes or send their children to school.
But with this declaration, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has shown that they will not stand idly by while our immigrant community is targeted. They have made it clear that Los Angeles County will not be complicit in the federal government’s cruel and inhumane immigration policies.
This decision has also opened the door for other counties and municipalities to follow suit. As the largest county in the nation, Los Angeles has set an example for others to stand up and protect the rights of their immigrant populations. This is a shining moment for our county and serves as a beacon of hope for those who have been living in fear.
It is important to note that this declaration does not mean that the county is becoming a sanctuary for criminals. As stated by Supervisor Janice Hahn, “We are not protecting criminals. We are protecting families, we are protecting individuals who are here trying to seek a better life.”
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ declaration to declare a state of emergency over ICE arrests of illegal aliens reflects the true values of our community. We are a diverse and inclusive county, and we will not allow the inhumane treatment of our immigrant community to continue. We stand united in our support for all of our residents, regardless of their background or immigration status.
In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, this action by our Board of Supervisors serves as a guiding light – a reminder that we will always come together to protect and defend our community, no matter the challenge. It is a moment we can all be proud of, and one that will be remembered for years to come.
As we continue to navigate through the complexities of the immigration system, let us remember the words of Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, “This is a defining moment for Los Angeles County. We must lead the efforts to ensure that families are kept together and that individuals can go about their lives without fear.”
Together, we can create a safer and more inclusive community for all. Let us stand strong in our support for one another, and let this declaration be a testament to the values that define us as Angelenos.
