Indian IT firms need to revisit the way they upskill talent, say analysts

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the demand for skilled workers is at an all-time high. With technological advancements and changing market trends, the job market is constantly evolving, and employers are seeking individuals with specific skills to meet their demands. However, there seems to be a growing disconnect between the nature of skilling initiatives and the real-world demands.

Skilling initiatives are programs or schemes that aim to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the job market. These initiatives can range from vocational training programs to online courses and workshops. While these initiatives have good intentions, there is a growing concern that they are not adequately preparing individuals for the real-world demands of the job market.

One of the main reasons for this disconnect is the lack of collaboration between skilling initiatives and industry demands. Many skilling initiatives are designed and implemented without proper consultation with industry experts. As a result, the skills being taught may not align with the current needs of the job market. This leads to a situation where individuals are trained in skills that are not in demand, making it difficult for them to find suitable employment.

Moreover, skilling initiatives often focus on theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills. While theoretical knowledge is essential, it is not enough to succeed in the real world. Employers are looking for individuals who can apply their knowledge to real-life situations and have hands-on experience. Therefore, skilling initiatives need to incorporate practical training and internships to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Another issue is the lack of emphasis on soft skills in skilling initiatives. Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, are crucial for success in any job. However, these skills are often overlooked in skilling initiatives, which focus more on technical skills. As a result, individuals may have the necessary technical skills but lack the soft skills required to excel in the workplace.

Furthermore, there is a mismatch between the duration of skilling initiatives and the time required to acquire the skills needed for a particular job. Many skilling initiatives are short-term, ranging from a few weeks to a few months. However, some skills, such as coding or data analysis, require a more extended period to master. This mismatch leads to individuals having a superficial understanding of a skill, making them less employable.

The disconnect between skilling initiatives and real-world demands is also evident in the lack of industry-relevant certifications. While skilling initiatives provide individuals with a certificate upon completion, these certificates may not hold much value in the job market. Employers are looking for individuals with certifications that are recognized and valued by the industry. Therefore, skilling initiatives need to collaborate with industry bodies to offer certifications that are relevant and recognized.

To address this growing disconnect, there needs to be a more significant emphasis on industry collaboration in skilling initiatives. Industry experts should be involved in the design and implementation of these initiatives to ensure that the skills being taught are in line with industry demands. Moreover, skilling initiatives should offer internships and practical training opportunities to provide individuals with hands-on experience.

There also needs to be a shift towards a more holistic approach to skilling. Along with technical skills, skilling initiatives should focus on developing soft skills and providing individuals with a well-rounded education. This will not only make individuals more employable but also help them succeed in their careers.

Furthermore, skilling initiatives should be tailored to the needs of the job market. This means offering courses and certifications that are in demand and have a high employability rate. Skilling initiatives should also be flexible and adapt to changing market trends to ensure that individuals are equipped with the skills needed for the jobs of the future.

In conclusion, there is a growing disconnect between the nature of skilling initiatives and real-world demands. To bridge this gap, there needs to be a more significant emphasis on industry collaboration, practical training, and soft skills development. Skilling initiatives should also be tailored to the needs of the job market and offer industry-relevant certifications. By addressing these issues, we can ensure that skilling initiatives are preparing individuals for the real-world demands of the job market and contribute to a skilled and employable workforce.
