FACT CHECK: Newsom Falsely Claims Riots Only Began After Trump Federalized Guard

In a recent statement, California Governor Gavin Newsom made a false claim that the Los Angeles riots only began after President Donald Trump federalized the California National Guard. This statement, made during a press conference, has been proven to be completely untrue and has caused a stir among both political parties.

The riots in Los Angeles began on May 27, 2020, following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The protests, which started out as peaceful demonstrations against police brutality, quickly turned violent as looting and vandalism broke out in various parts of the city. The situation escalated to the point where the California National Guard was called in to assist local law enforcement in maintaining order.

However, Governor Newsom’s statement implies that the riots only began after President Trump’s decision to federalize the National Guard. This is not only factually incorrect, but it also undermines the efforts of local law enforcement and the National Guard in trying to restore peace and order in the city.

In reality, the riots in Los Angeles had been ongoing for several days before the National Guard was called in. The decision to federalize the National Guard was made in response to the escalating violence and destruction, not the other way around. It was a necessary step to protect the citizens of Los Angeles and their property.

Governor Newsom’s false claim not only spreads misinformation but also deflects from the real issue at hand – the need for police reform and an end to systemic racism. By falsely blaming President Trump for the riots, Newsom is trying to shift the focus away from the root cause of the protests and the urgent need for change.

Furthermore, Newsom’s statement is a clear attempt to politicize the situation and create division among the people. In a time when unity and understanding are crucial, it is disappointing to see a leader using false information to further their own agenda.

It is also worth noting that President Trump’s decision to federalize the National Guard was supported by Governor Newsom himself. In a letter to the President, Newsom requested federal assistance in dealing with the riots, stating that “the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous” and that “additional support is needed to maintain peace and safety.”

In light of these facts, it is evident that Governor Newsom’s claim is baseless and misleading. It is important for leaders to be truthful and responsible in their statements, especially during times of crisis. False claims only serve to create confusion and hinder the efforts of those working towards a solution.

In conclusion, Governor Newsom’s statement that the Los Angeles riots only began after President Trump federalized the California National Guard is false and has been proven to be so. The riots began before the National Guard was called in and the decision to federalize them was made in response to the escalating violence. It is crucial for leaders to be honest and transparent, especially during times of crisis, and to work together towards finding solutions instead of spreading false information. Let us focus on the real issues at hand and work towards a better and more just society for all.
