Prosecutors: Chicago Parolee Punched Priest Outside Holy Name Cathedral During Carjacking

Chicago prosecutors have recently reported a disturbing incident that took place outside Holy Name Cathedral. According to their statement, a man on parole attempted to steal a car and ended up punching a Catholic priest in the process. This shocking incident has left the community in shock and has raised questions about the safety of our neighborhoods.

The incident occurred on Monday evening when Father Matthew Comerford, a priest at Holy Name Cathedral, was about to get into his car after finishing his evening prayers. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Augustus, approached Father Comerford and demanded his car keys at gunpoint. When the priest refused to comply, Augustus punched him and fled the scene on foot. Father Comerford was left with a bruised face and a broken nose.

This incident has caused an uproar in the community, with many questioning the security measures in place around the cathedral. Holy Name Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a popular tourist destination. It is concerning to think that such a violent act could occur in broad daylight at a place that is supposed to be a sanctuary for all.

Fortunately, the Chicago Police Department acted swiftly and was able to apprehend Augustus within hours of the incident. He has been charged with attempted vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery, and possession of a stolen vehicle. It has also been revealed that Augustus was on parole for a previous carjacking incident and was wearing an electronic monitoring device at the time of the attack.

The Catholic community has come together to show their support for Father Comerford. The Archdiocese of Chicago released a statement condemning the attack and assuring the public that the safety of their clergy and parishioners is of utmost importance. They also thanked the police for their quick response and apprehension of the suspect.

Father Comerford has also received an outpouring of support from the community. Many have expressed their shock and disbelief at the incident and have offered their prayers for his speedy recovery. Some have even offered to help with any expenses incurred due to the attack.

This incident serves as a reminder that we must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our communities. It is also a wake-up call for authorities to review the parole and monitoring systems in place for repeat offenders. We cannot let such individuals roam free and pose a threat to innocent people.

In the aftermath of this incident, there has been an increase in security measures around Holy Name Cathedral. The police have stepped up patrols in the area, and the Archdiocese has implemented additional safety protocols for their clergy and staff. It is reassuring to see that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The Catholic Church has always been a symbol of peace and love, and it is disheartening to see an act of violence take place on its grounds. However, this incident has also shown the resilience and unity of the community. The support and prayers for Father Comerford have been a testament to the strong bond within the Catholic community.

As we move forward from this unfortunate incident, let us remember to keep Father Comerford and all victims of violence in our thoughts and prayers. Let us also remain vigilant and work towards creating safer communities for everyone. We must not let fear and violence prevail, but instead, come together in love and support for one another.
