The Minnesota Lynx, a professional women’s basketball team, held a powerful and emotional moment of silence on Friday in honor of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man whose tragic death has sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice.
Before their game against the Connecticut Sun, the Lynx players and coaching staff gathered at center court, heads bowed and hands clasped, to pay their respects to Floyd and all those who have been affected by systemic racism and violence.
The moment of silence was a poignant reminder that sports can be a platform for social change and a call to action for all of us to stand up against injustice.
The Lynx, who have a history of using their platform to advocate for social justice, released a statement saying, “We stand in solidarity with the Black community and all those who are fighting for justice and equality. We will not stay silent and we will continue to use our voices and our platform to demand change.”
The team’s gesture was met with praise and support from fans and fellow athletes, with many taking to social media to express their appreciation for the Lynx’s powerful statement.
But this is not the first time the Lynx have taken a stand against racial injustice. In 2016, the team wore black warm-up shirts with the words “Change starts with us” on the front and the names of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, two Black men who were killed by police, on the back. The Lynx also held a press conference to address the issue and called for action from the community.
Their actions sparked controversy and backlash, with some fans and law enforcement officers threatening to boycott the team. But the Lynx stood firm in their beliefs and continued to use their platform to speak out against injustice.
Their courage and determination to use their platform for good is a testament to the power of sports and the impact athletes can have on society.
The Lynx’s moment of silence for George Floyd is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to stand up against racism and discrimination. It is not enough to simply be non-racist, we must actively be anti-racist and work towards creating a more just and equal society.
As the Lynx continue to use their platform to advocate for change, it is important for all of us to listen, learn, and take action. We must educate ourselves on the issues and have difficult conversations with our friends and family. We must also support organizations and initiatives that are working towards racial equality.
In the words of Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, “We have to be better. We have to do better. We have to be part of the solution.”
The Lynx’s moment of silence for George Floyd was a powerful and moving display of solidarity and a call to action for all of us to stand up against racism and injustice. Let us all follow their lead and work towards creating a more just and equal world for all.
