Jeffrey Goldberg: Claim Media Covered for Biden Is Misunderstanding of How Reporting Works, Need Sources to Say He’s Diminished

In a recent discussion on PBS’s “Washington Week,” host and The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg addressed the growing narrative that the media has been covering for President Joe Biden. Joined by “Original Sin” authors CNN host Jake Tapper and Axios National Political Correspondent and CNN Contributor Alex Thompson, Goldberg expressed his confusion over how this narrative has developed and suggested that it may stem from a lack of understanding about how reporting works.

Goldberg’s comments came in response to Tapper’s and Thompson’s discussion of their new book, which delves into the events leading up to the January 6th Capitol riot and the role of the media in covering the Trump administration. Tapper and Thompson argued that the media’s focus on Trump’s outrageous behavior and controversial statements often overshadowed important policy issues and allowed him to control the narrative.

However, Goldberg pushed back against the idea that the media was intentionally covering for Biden, stating, “I don’t understand how this narrative has developed…that the media was covering for Biden.” He went on to explain that in order to prove that Biden is diminished, there needs to be sources inside the administration providing information to reporters.

Goldberg’s statement highlights an important aspect of journalism – the reliance on sources to provide accurate and reliable information. Without sources, reporters are unable to verify claims and present a complete picture of a story. This is especially crucial when it comes to reporting on the mental and physical health of a public figure like the President.

The idea that the media is covering for Biden is not only a misunderstanding of how reporting works, but it also undermines the hard work and dedication of journalists who strive to provide accurate and unbiased information to the public. It is a disservice to the profession and the public to suggest that the media is intentionally hiding or downplaying any information about the President’s health.

Furthermore, the notion that Biden is diminished is not supported by any concrete evidence. While there may be concerns about his age and health, these are not new issues and were openly discussed during the election campaign. Biden has also undergone regular medical check-ups and has been deemed fit to serve as President by his doctors.

It is also worth noting that the media has not shied away from reporting on Biden’s gaffes or slip-ups. Just like any other public figure, he is subject to scrutiny and criticism. However, it is unfair to use these occasional slip-ups as evidence of his diminished mental capacity.

In fact, the media has been quick to fact-check and correct any false or misleading information about Biden, regardless of political affiliation. This is a testament to the integrity and professionalism of journalists who strive to uphold the principles of ethical reporting.

In conclusion, the idea that the media is covering for Biden is a misunderstanding of how reporting works. Without sources providing information, it is impossible for journalists to verify claims and present a complete picture of a story. Furthermore, there is no evidence to support the claim that Biden is diminished, and it is unfair to use occasional slip-ups as proof of his mental capacity. Let us trust in the integrity of journalists and their commitment to providing accurate and unbiased information to the public.
