L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad pegs accumulated loss at ₹6,600 crore, launches ‘Save Your Metro’ campaign

The recent hike in fares across public transportation has sparked criticism from both the public and politicians. Many have voiced their concerns over the steep increase in prices, arguing that it will have a significant impact on the daily lives of commuters. As a society, it is natural for us to resist change, especially when it comes to something as essential as our daily commute. However, I believe that there are reasons behind this increase, and instead of criticizing, we should try to understand them.

Firstly, it is essential to note that public transportation is not a profit-making business. The fares collected from commuters are used to cover the operational costs of running the system, such as maintenance, salaries, and fuel. With the rising cost of living and inflation, these operational costs have also increased. It would be unfair to expect public transportation services to remain at the same prices when all other expenses have gone up.

Moreover, the pandemic has hit the public transportation sector hard. With the implementation of safety measures, such as reduced seating capacity and increased cleaning protocols, the operational costs have increased further. The revenue from fares has taken a hit as well, with fewer people using public transportation due to remote work and travel restrictions. This has put a strain on the financial stability of public transportation services, making an increase in fares necessary.

Furthermore, the government also has a role to play in this situation. Public transportation services receive subsidies from the government to keep the fares affordable for the public. However, with the economic impact of the pandemic, the government has had to cut back on these subsidies to focus on other essential areas. This has resulted in the need for public transportation services to raise their fares to cover the shortfall.

While the increase in fares may be hard to swallow for some, we must also consider the improvements and investments being made in public transportation. Many services have been upgrading their fleet of vehicles, providing commuters with newer, more efficient and comfortable options. This investment requires a significant amount of funding, which can only be obtained through a slight increase in fares. In the long run, these improvements will ultimately benefit the public by providing a better and more reliable transportation system.

Moreover, the hike in fares can also be seen as an opportunity to promote the use of public transportation. With the increased prices, some may consider exploring alternative modes of transport, such as carpooling, cycling, or walking. This, in turn, can help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, creating a more sustainable and healthier environment for everyone.

It is also worth mentioning that public transportation services offer various concessions and discounts to certain groups, such as students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities. These measures ensure that those most in need have access to affordable transportation, which is crucial in promoting inclusivity and equality in our society.

It is understandable that any increase in prices can cause concern and frustration. However, we must look at the bigger picture and understand the reasons behind it. We must also consider the long-term benefits of a well-maintained and efficient public transportation system. As a society, we must work together to find ways to support our public transportation services, whether it be through using them more often or advocating for government subsidies.

In conclusion, the recent hike in fares for public transportation services has faced criticism from the public and politicians. However, it is essential to understand the reasons behind this increase and to look at the long-term benefits it can bring. Instead of criticizing, we must work together to support our public transportation services and ensure that they continue to provide affordable and efficient transportation for all. Let us embrace this change and strive towards a better and more sustainable future.
