For the past decade, the Democratic party has positioned itself as the self-proclaimed “defenders of democracy.” They have touted themselves as the protectors of American values and institutions, standing up against any perceived threats to our democracy. But in recent years, their actions have often fallen short of their words, leaving many to question the sincerity of their supposed defense of democracy.
One such instance of this is the treatment of David Hogg, a young activist who rose to prominence after surviving the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Hogg, along with other survivors, became a vocal advocate for stricter gun control laws, garnering attention and support from many on the left. However, his recent statement regarding the Democratic party’s lack of progress on the issue has led to a major fallout, revealing the true colors of the so-called “defenders of democracy.”
In a now-deleted tweet, Hogg expressed his frustration with the Democratic party’s failure to pass meaningful gun control legislation despite having control of both the House and Senate. He stated, “Democrats have failed to deliver on their promises to protect us, and every day we go on without action, more lives are lost.” This honest and justified criticism sparked a backlash from prominent Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chris Murphy, who accused Hogg of lacking gratitude and understanding of the political process.
This response from the very party that claims to be the “defenders of democracy” is not only disappointing but hypocritical. Here we have a young individual, who has been through a traumatic experience and has used his platform to advocate for change, being silenced and dismissed by those who are supposed to be his allies. It is a clear indication that the Democratic party is more concerned with maintaining their power and image than actually taking action to protect the American people.
But this is not the first time the Democratic party has shown their true colors when it comes to defending democracy. In recent years, we have seen them resort to divisive and undemocratic tactics, such as the impeachment of President Trump based on flimsy evidence and the constant attacks on anyone who does not share their ideology. They have also engaged in blatant voter suppression by pushing for stricter voter ID laws and gerrymandering districts to benefit their party.
Let us not forget that it was the Democratic party that pushed for the elimination of the Electoral College, a cornerstone of our democratic system, simply because it did not work in their favor. They have also been vocal proponents of packing the Supreme Court, a move that would undermine the checks and balances of our government and give them ultimate control over the judicial branch.
The truth is, the Democratic party’s actions do not align with their rhetoric of being the “defenders of democracy.” They have proven time and time again that they are willing to bend and break the rules to get their way, even if it means sacrificing the very principles of democracy they claim to uphold. This begs the question, can we really trust them to protect our democracy?
It is time for the Democratic party to take a hard look in the mirror and re-evaluate their priorities. Instead of playing political games and pandering to their base, they should focus on actually delivering on their promises to the American people. They need to listen to voices like David Hogg’s and take meaningful action to address the issues that are plaguing our country.
In the end, it is not about which party is in power, but about upholding the values and principles that make our democracy strong. And that includes listening to and respecting the voices of the people, even if they do not align with our own. It is time for the Democratic party to truly live up to their name and defend democracy, not just for political gain, but for the sake of our nation’s future.
