Mandatory bag checks introduced for all visitors

Starting 29 April 2025, The National Archives will be implementing new security measures to ensure the safety of our visitors, staff, and collections. These measures are necessary to maintain a secure and welcoming environment for all who enter our building.

Upon entering The National Archives’ building, all visitors will be required to have their bags, containers, and other belongings searched by our trained security staff. This is a standard procedure in many public spaces and is in line with our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all.

The safety and security of our visitors and staff is our top priority, and these new measures will help us achieve that goal. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, but we assure you that it is for the greater good. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to enhance our security protocols.

It is important to note that the list of prohibited items remains the same and includes weapons of any kind, unidentified substances, and any other items that may pose a threat to the safety of our visitors and staff. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing these items into our building to ensure a smooth and efficient security process.

We understand that some visitors may have concerns about their privacy during the bag search process. Please be assured that our security staff are trained to conduct these searches with the utmost respect and discretion. Your privacy is important to us, and we will do everything in our power to protect it.

We also want to assure our visitors that these new security measures will not affect their access to our collections. Our reading rooms and research facilities will remain open and accessible to all. We encourage you to continue to explore our vast collection of historical documents and artifacts.

The National Archives is committed to providing a safe and inclusive space for all visitors. We believe that these new security measures will only enhance the overall experience for our visitors. We are constantly reviewing and updating our security protocols to ensure that we are providing the best possible environment for our visitors and staff.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our visitors for their continued support and understanding as we implement these new security measures. We are confident that these measures will help us maintain a safe and secure environment for all who enter our building.

In conclusion, The National Archives is dedicated to preserving and protecting our nation’s history. These new security measures are a necessary step in fulfilling that commitment. We look forward to welcoming you to our building and providing you with a safe and enriching experience. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
