Police given extra powers after reports of people throwing fireworks at locals

Local authorities in Cardiff have implemented a new strategy to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents during the Halloween period. The strategy, called the ”Halloween Safety and Community Protection Plan” covers the areas of Grangetown and Butetown and aims to prevent gatherings, illegal use of fireworks and associated anti-social behaviour.

Halloween is a time when people come together to celebrate and have fun, but unfortunately, it can also be a time when certain individuals engage in dangerous or disruptive activities. In the past, these areas have experienced incidents of anti-social behaviour and the illegal use of fireworks during this period. However, this year, the local authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure that the community can enjoy Halloween without any concerns for their safety.

The Halloween Safety and Community Protection Plan is a collaborative effort between the council, police and fire services, and local community groups. It involves various initiatives to prevent gatherings and anti-social behaviour in the area. One of the key measures is increased police presence and patrols in the neighborhoods of Grangetown and Butetown. Additional street lighting has also been installed in strategic areas to improve visibility and deter any potential criminal activities.

But the plan doesn’t stop there. To further discourage any gatherings or anti-social behaviour, the council will also be enforcing the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). This ensures that individuals who are causing a nuisance or engaging in anti-social activities will face legal consequences. This measure sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated in our community.

In addition to that, the illegal use of fireworks is also a significant concern during Halloween, and the council has taken steps to address this issue. The council’s Trading Standards team is working closely with local retailers to ensure that they are not selling fireworks to anyone under the age of 18. They are also checking for any illegal or dangerous fireworks being sold in the area. This not only prevents the use of fireworks by minors but also ensures that the fireworks available are of good quality and safe to use.

The Community Safety Team of the council has also been actively engaging with the local community to raise awareness and educate them about the proper use of fireworks. They have held several workshops and talks in schools and community centers to highlight the potential dangers of fireworks and how to handle them safely. This initiative not only promotes a safer Halloween but also creates a sense of responsibility among the community to ensure that everyone stays safe during this festive season.

Apart from these measures, the council has also set up a dedicated hotline for residents to report any incidents of illegal use of fireworks or gatherings that may result in anti-social behaviour. The council will then work with the police and fire services to respond quickly and effectively to such reports.

The Halloween Safety and Community Protection Plan have received positive feedback from the local community. Many residents feel reassured that the local authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure their safety. Moreover, with the increased police presence and patrols, residents feel more secure and confident in celebrating Halloween in their neighborhoods.

The councillor for Butetown, Ms. Sarah Jones said, ”The safety and wellbeing of our residents are of utmost importance to us, and the Halloween Safety and Community Protection Plan is a testament to that. We want everyone to have a fun and enjoyable Halloween, but we also want to ensure it is done safely and responsibly. This plan is a collaborative effort that involves the community, and we hope to build on this partnership for future events as well.”

The council and local authorities are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all residents, especially during festive seasons. The Halloween Safety and Community Protection Plan is a significant step in promoting a strong and united community, and we can all work together to create a safer, more vibrant neighborhood. Let’s celebrate this Halloween responsibly and make Grangetown and Butetown a place we can all be proud of.
