New initiative to improve access to Holocaust-related collections

We are proud to announce that we have become a founding member of EHRI-UK, the national body representing Holocaust-related collections in the United Kingdom. This is a significant step in our commitment to preserving and promoting the memory of the Holocaust and its victims.

EHRI-UK is a collaboration between four prestigious institutions – the Wiener Holocaust Library, the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London, the Parkes Institute at the University of Southampton, and our own organization. Together, we aim to create a unified platform for Holocaust-related collections in the UK, connecting researchers, educators, and the wider public with valuable resources and knowledge.

This initiative is part of the larger European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), a network of institutions and archives across Europe that work towards the same goal – preserving and providing access to Holocaust-related materials. EHRI-UK is the national branch of this network, with a specific focus on the UK and its unique contributions to Holocaust research.

As a founding member of EHRI-UK, we are excited to bring our expertise and resources to this collaborative effort. Our organization has a long history of documenting and educating about the Holocaust, and we are honored to join forces with other leading institutions in this field.

The Wiener Holocaust Library, founded in 1933, is one of the world’s oldest and most respected Holocaust research centers. It holds a vast collection of over one million items, including rare books, documents, photographs, and testimonies from survivors, witnesses, and perpetrators. The Library’s mission is to promote understanding and awareness of the Holocaust and its impact on the world.

The Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London, is a leading academic center for the study of the Holocaust and genocide. Its interdisciplinary approach brings together scholars from various fields to explore the complexities of this dark chapter in history. The Institute also offers postgraduate programs and hosts conferences and events to engage with audiences beyond the academic community.

The Parkes Institute at the University of Southampton is known for its research on Jewish history, culture, and identity. It has a strong focus on the Holocaust, with expertise in the fields of memory studies and digital humanities. The Institute also works closely with communities to preserve and promote Jewish heritage.

Together with these esteemed institutions, we will work towards preserving, digitizing, and providing access to Holocaust-related materials in the UK. This will not only benefit researchers and academics but also students, educators, and the wider public who seek to learn about this important period in history.

EHRI-UK will also serve as a hub for collaboration and exchange among institutions, encouraging joint projects and initiatives. By connecting with other institutions across Europe, we can contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust and its impact on our world today.

In addition to our commitment to EHRI-UK, we will continue our own efforts to educate and raise awareness about the Holocaust. Through exhibitions, educational programs, and other initiatives, we will strive to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust remains alive and relevant for future generations.

We are grateful for the opportunity to be a founding member of EHRI-UK and look forward to working closely with our partners to achieve our shared goals. Together, we will honor the victims, preserve the memory, and continue to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust. We invite everyone to join us on this important journey.
