Major improvement works to our building

The National Archives, located in the heart of our nation’s capital, is a vital institution that serves as the guardian of our country’s history. It is a place where important documents and records are preserved for future generations to learn from and be inspired by. As such, it is our responsibility to ensure that these valuable collections are protected and conserved for years to come. That is why we are pleased to announce that we have started work to replace the repository windows on the second, third and fourth floors of the 1970s part of The National Archives’ building.

The work, which is set to be completed in early 2025, is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of our collections. Our existing aluminium double-glazed windows have served us well for over 40 years, but it is now time for them to be replaced. This decision was not made lightly, but after careful consideration and consultation with experts, we have determined that it is necessary to ensure the long-term preservation of our collections.

The new windows will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of our building, but more importantly, they will provide better protection for our collections. The advanced technology used in the manufacturing of these windows will provide improved insulation and UV protection, which are crucial factors in preserving delicate documents and artifacts. This will also result in energy savings for the institution, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly upgrade.

We understand that the replacement of the windows may cause some inconvenience to our visitors and staff, but we assure you that we have taken all necessary measures to minimize any disruptions. Our team has worked diligently to create a detailed plan that will ensure the smooth and efficient execution of the project. We will also provide regular updates on the progress of the work to keep everyone informed.

We are proud to say that this project is a testament to our commitment to preserving our nation’s history. The National Archives is not just a building, but a symbol of our country’s heritage and identity. It is a place where people from all walks of life come to discover and learn about our past. We owe it to them and to future generations to protect and conserve our collections to the best of our abilities.

In addition to the replacement of the windows, we are also taking this opportunity to make other necessary improvements to the building. This includes upgrading the HVAC system and implementing new security measures to ensure the safety of our collections. These upgrades will not only benefit our collections but also enhance the experience of our visitors and staff.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated team of professionals who have been working tirelessly to make this project a reality. Their expertise and dedication to preserving our collections are truly commendable. We would also like to express our gratitude to our visitors and staff for their understanding and support during this time.

As we embark on this journey to replace the repository windows, we are filled with excitement and optimism for the future. We are confident that these improvements will not only benefit our institution but also contribute to the overall preservation of our nation’s history. We look forward to welcoming you to The National Archives in early 2025 to witness the transformation of our building and continue our mission to safeguard our country’s past for generations to come.
